In this assignment for an Advanced Typography class, we were to create a beer label for our family. The Lenihans are an old Irish family that even have a Coat of Arms, which is a stag holding a three leaf clover in front of a castle. The Lenihan beer is meant to honor the family’s Irish nationality, as well as their family history. In the logotype, the shoulder of the h goes over the a to create a unique ligature, representing the family’s trek across the Atlantic Ocean. The label uses Celtic fonts and a prominent illustration of a stag to represent our family roots. Some of the most prominent Celtic symbols are the variety of knots, such as the Trinity knot. This stitching pattern has been incorporated into the stag’s antlers, tying together the Lenihan family history with the Irish history. Finally, the neck label uses a three leaf clover from the family crest as the main icon, again tying together Irish and Lenihan family history. This label is about honoring the past, while simultaneously embracing the bold contemporary art styles of today through color, shapes, and composition.
